CHICAGO, IL – – (September 3, 2024)- –
For the first time this fall, girls’ flag football is an Illinois High School Association sanctioned sport.
Marist High School Chicago is thrilled at this important landmark for women’s athletics and we are excited to launch a girls’ flag football program this season.
The IHSA decided to officially add the sport after significant growing interest in flag football over the last 3 years.
The last sport added by IHSA and Marist High School was girls wrestling in 2022.
Under the leadership of former boys football coach, Ron Dawczak, our RedHawks are excited to kick off this historic season. Coach Dawczak went on to say, “I’m excited that Marist added a girls’ flag football program because it gives our girls an opportunity to do something that has never been done before in the history of Marist High School. These girls are pioneers. Our current seniors played in last year’s Powder Puff game, but other than that, this is an entirely new experience for our players. They have been incredibly eager to learn the finer points of a new sport and have already made huge strides from the first practice a few weeks ago. The thing I look forward to the most this season is watching the girls improve each and every day, while at the same building strong bonds with their teammates that will last a lifetime.”
Marist will host Mother McAuley on Wednesday, September 4th.
The inaugural IHSA Girls Flag Football State Finals will take place on Friday and Saturday, October 18-19, 2024.
