For over 30 years, Dan left a lasting legacy on the Marist High School community as a dedicated educator, coach, and mentor enriching the lives of all who knew him. Dan was at Marist when the school opened in 1963. He chaired the physical education department and was the school’s first varsity basketball coach in 1965.
In 1970, Dan assumed the role of alumni moderator, which was a new position at Marist. In this capacity, he coordinated all alumni activities. He organized socials, dances, alumni sporting events, memorial Masses, Homecoming and wrote an alumni newsletter. He enjoyed this role until he retired in 1997, viewing it as an important way for alumni to keep in touch with Marist. It helped that he knew almost all alumni personally.
A graduate of De La Salle High School, Dan holds a bachelor of arts degree in physical education from St. Ambrose University. After serving in the Korean Conflict for two years, he returned to finish his bachelor’s degree and went on to earn a master of arts degree from Truman University. All totaled, his teaching career spanned 39 years.
His sons, Danny ’79 and Kevin ’85, both attended Marist. Dan gained many lifelong friends and connections working at Marist, especially in Walter O’Grady, his friend for 60 years.
During his career Dan also accrued recognition for his many contributions. In 1992 the Marist Alumni Association named him Man of the Year. After his retirement, Dan remained in the very fabric of Marist, often attending basketball or football game.
Eternal rest grant unto Dan, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him.
May Dan’s soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
