This summer, Marist was fortunate enough to have a new mural painted in the upstairs hallway outside of our counseling department. The artist, Thomas Fleming, met with the counseling department and administration a few times during last school year to brainstorm aspects of the mural that symbolize Marist. Thomas brought this vision to life and we are so grateful for him sharing our talents to make our hallways a little more colorful and vibrant!
Some specific aspects of the mural that give a nod to Marist life are:
- The water/river/stones are symbolic of La Valla and the Hermitage.
- The Chicago skyline & four stars of the Chicago flag to pay homage to Marist Chicago.
- The butterfly symbolizes growth and hope.
- “Don’t fret” written in the top right corner. This saying is something Br. Vito used to say to bring comfort, peace, calmness to those he worked with and his students.
- The tree is symbolic of strength and interconnectedness.
We are so excited to have this new piece of art in our halls! Thomas has also done mural work for Nicky V’s, UIC hospital, and more places around Chicago. You can check more of his work out here.
