On May 6, the Marist Powerlifting Club competed in the Illinois High School Powerlifting Association state competition after receiving an impressive six bids! These six individual bids were given based on performance at the IHSPA regional meet in February. Three boys and three girls received bids, and 5 students competed at state: Louis Evora ’23, Jacob Podbielniak ’25, Olivia Herrera ’23, Alexis Buckley ’24, and Michaela Torres ’24.

Marist was one of 24 schools that competed at the state competition held at Stagg High School on May 6, 2023. All of the RedHawk lifters hit personal records at the state meet. Olivia Herrera took second in her weight class!
The meet is organized and divided by weight class and gender, and athletes only have the opportunity to place in their weight class. They compete in three main lifts- squat, bench, and deadlift. Each person gets three attempts to lift their highest and best weight.
At the regional competition in February, Alexis, Olivia and Shawn Hawthorne ’23 each placed in their respective weight class.
