At Marist High School, we’re proud to celebrate the many contributions of Black Americans to our country’s history year-round. Yet during February, we focus even more on Black history and how it has shaped our nation, from culture to progress in civil rights, scientific achievement and more.
Activities at Marist this Month
Throughout the month, our classrooms will be sharing lessons that highlights Black Americans. We look forward to sharing photos and updates throughout the month.
Choir – This month at Marist, our chorus students will experience works by influential Black artists each day, ranging from Mary Wilson to John Legend and Whitney Houston.
English – English classes will feature daily readings and discussions of African American poetry from celebrated writers with Chicago ties such as Langston Hughes, Claude McKay and lifelong Chicago native Gwendolyn Brooks.
Religion – Our religion classes will highlight influential African Americans and lead students through visual hallway displays focused on notable Black figures in the Bible.
School-wide – Students throughout the school will have the opportunity to learn more about influential Black Americans including Tyler Perry, Wilma Rudolph, Frederick Douglass, Bill Russell and Ida B. Wells. Additionally, display walls will provide more opportunities to educate our students.
