Sophomore Retreat Program
Marist High School’s sophomore retreat program concluded in late April after the seventeenth group of students spent a day working for Catholic Charities packing food for the elderly. Over the course of the school year Marist sophomores assembled 14,226 monthly meal packs.
Catholic Charities’ McKinley Park
On 17 Thursdays during the 2017-2018 school a sophomore homeroom participated in the day-long service retreat starting at Marist with prayer, team bonding exercises, and education on food deserts, hunger, and what they can do to help. They then head to Catholic Charities’ McKinley Park food warehouse where they help sort, organize and package non-perishable food products together to be brought to food pantries for elderly families. The students then share a meal together and bless all the food they packaged.
“This is a special retreat on several levels,” said campus minister Patrick Meyer ’10. “They learn about how close to home food insecurity is, they create bonds with each other as they work as a team during the day, and they realize the impact they can have on an issue facing so many people.”
Good News of Christ’s Love
The students act as apostles to bring the Good News of Christ’s love and compassion to elderly people in need of food. This retreat helps students understand the breadth and depth of the Catholic Church and Marist’s place in the larger community.
All freshmen and sophomores at Marist attend a retreat during the school year. Retreats for juniors and seniors are optional.
