Incoming Freshmen Placement Exams
World Language Placement Exams
Students who have taken French or Spanish in grammar school and have been placed in French 1 or Spanish 1 Academic are eligible to take a language placement exam to be considered for Honors placement in French or Spanish. The exam will be administered by a member of the Language Department and will include a multiple-choice section, a written section and a listening section. The exam will last approximately 60 minutes and students will need a pencil and a pen. You must register by March 20th for all placement exams.
Dates for World Language exams: please note although dates are the same there are 2 separate registrations for non-heritage and heritage Spanish speaking students.
Spanish and French Placement exam dates and times:
- Thursday, March 21 – 3:30pm-4:30pm
- Saturday, March 23 – 10:00am-11:00am
Please enter through the main office entrance at the west end of the building. Register no later than March 20th.
World Languages for Spanish Speakers
Is Spanish already spoken at home? Why not enroll your child in the Italian or French class? Or if you prefer, why not consider a Spanish class for Spanish speakers?
Marist High School offers a class for students considered to be “Heritage Speakers” whose families speak Spanish. An aptitude test is required to enroll in Spanish-speaking classes. No test is needed if you choose to enroll in Italian or French classes.
Heritage Speaker Placement exam dates and times:
- Thursday, March 21 – 3:30pm-4:30pm
- Saturday, March 23 – 10:00am-11:00am

Math
Students admitted to the class of 2028 are encouraged to complete an additional math placement exam which is designed and corrected by our Math Department faculty members. This test will cover basic math through Algebra 1 and will provide us additional data in placing your child.
If your math placement indicated “to be determined” you are required to take this exam.
The exam will last approximately 90 minutes and students will need a pencil and a pen. No calculator needed.
Math placement exam dates:
- Saturday, March 23 – 8:30am-10am; Students can start arriving at 8am to the Main Office Entrance. The test begins promptly at 8:30am. If a student finishes earlier than 10am, they can leave.
- Monday, March 25 – 3:30pm-5pm; Students can start arriving at 3:15pm to the Main Office Entrance. The test begins promptly at 3:30pm. If a student finishes earlier than 5pm, they can leave.
- Tuesday, March 26 – 3:30pm-5pm; Students can start arriving at 3:15pm to the Main Office Entrance. The test begins promptly at 3:30pm. If a student finishes earlier than 5pm, they can leave.
